The pleasure of using a roll of film

As most of you know, although I shoot mostly in digital, I also use film regularly-especially medium format film. It's quite common that if I use both my digital camera and my film camera on a shoot, the best shots-the real keepers- would happen to be the few shots on film. Of course, there are plenty of possible reasons for that but I don't want to discuss them now.

Today I had a roll of film developped, 12 shots from 3 different photo sessions... I had almost forgotten what was on them. This is one of the things I love with film. You keep it for a while inside your camera, then you keep it for some time before bringing it to the lab...and then a few a few more hours or days before actually getting the negatives. This is just magic. Ghosts coming back from your past. Appearing on a light table. Resuscitating in your scanner. Making their comeback on a screen... Oh, how I love film.

Welcome to the year of the dragon

Dragon year

Here we are... We have finally entered the year of the dragon! It feels as if it had been ages since my last update of the blog, but it's only been a couple of months... The reason it's felt so long is probably because there's actually been a lot happening.

First of all, important update, we have now moved to China! WE means my wife, my son and I.

Ever since we left China, I had been looking forward to coming back. So when they offered me an interesting position as an English Teacher, I took the opportunity and here we are.

Of course, teaching isn't really connected to the arts, but that's a challenging position in a brand new experimental project on education and an experience I am glad to be part of.

So we've left France behind us with no specific plan of coming back in the near future. Right now, we are FREE. Free to stay here forever. Free to go somewhere else. Free to make any decision we wish.

In my mind, "being free" seems to simply mean "living without a plan" - which would scare a lot of people.

We have now been in Beijing since November and I can't say we've had time to do much-both in terms of network and in terms of visiting/enjoying ourselves.

The first months have been really difficult economically but now we're seeing the end of the tunnel. I hope so at least.

We've also had a month holiday for the Spring Festival and we've had the chance of visiting Cambodia and escape the freezing cold for a while.

Chances are, you'll see a lot of pictures of Cambodia in the coming days...

Now that we have finally entered the year of the dragon, I would like to wish all of you, wherever you are, an excellent year full of love, understanding, new discoveries and creativity!

May the dragon be with you!

Photographer #2: Marie Taillefer

The photographer I wish to write about today is obviously very much inspired by my previous choice of photographer - Sarah Moon - but Marie Taillefer manages to remain very personal despite her references to Moon's work.
She obviously has a similar approach to the world of fashion photography, but she ventures further in the post-treatment of the image and the fragmentation of the composition.
I got to discover Marie Taillefer's work through a portrait she made for the singer/songwriter Hindi Zahra.
Hindi
Finding it very special, I typed her name into Google and that was love at first sight.
Marie Taillefer has a sensual feel for colour and composition and a vibrant energy that explodes through the use of vivid colours and a very physical use of paint, cuts and collage techniques.
Her superb work is highly inspiring and moving and I urge you to visit the following works to get an idea of the magic she produces:
